Working with video
OpenBook can process a wide variety of video formats including .MOV, .AVI, .MP4, .MPEG, .3GP, .WMV and .WEBM. When you create a video element in openbook and upload your video file, OpenBook automatically transcodes and converts the file to mobile and tablet friendly H.264 / MP4 Format. For larger video files such as 1920 x 1080 MOV files shot with more professional and DSLR cameras you will need to size down your videos prior to upload in OpenBook! You have two options:
A. Change your camera’s settings to record at 640 x 480 SD (H.264) instead of 1920 x 1080
B. (recommended) Download a video conversion software and convert the files using your computer.
For option B we recommend a FREE and well documented software called handbrake. It’s compatible with both windows and mac and you may download a copy here: https://handbrake.fr/
When using handbrake don’t be intimidated by all of the settings, the process is very easy and works as follows:
1. click source, choose the video on your computer you would like to convert.
2. under "output settings" on the left side of the panel choose "format: MP4"
3. click “picture settings” at the top right of the window and adjust your video export size by clicking the down arrow to make the width of the video smaller while maintaining aspect ratio. We recommend
768 width. (1024 for larger videos but slower upload times)
4. click start (the exported video will be saved on your desktop)
You are done! Here is a screenshot with the buttons referenced above highlighted in yellow.
And here are two screenshots comparing how videos with a width of 1024 vs width of 768 will render in openbook:
